Scenario. Isabella and troupe. Isabella decides to run away from home, as she fears she may be forced to marry Pantalone. Rosalina suggests Lyon S, and so Isabella goes off to find Lyonesse. Taking Arlecchino with her, she hires Violente to guide her to the “Land of Lyonesse”. Along the way, they meet Brighella, Ballerina and Franceschina, who join them on the quest.

[Isabella is pacing, lamenting her plight. Troupe members are in position on stage, to be noticed later. Arlecchino is seated on the ground, hidden under a cloak, of course, eating. Violente is sharpening something, Brighella is playing with his sheep, perhaps attempting to teach it a trick, Ballerina is doing a ribbon dance, and Franceschina is seated, in concert rest position.]
Isabella: (lament, lament, lament)… Oh, what will I do? (blah, blah, pace pace) …Maybe I should run away from home?….
Rosalina enters, alarmed to find Isabella in a frantic state.
Rosalina: (interrupts her lamenting) What’s this I hear you say?! Why should you run away from home? …
Isabella: I have to run away! My father insists that I marry that ugly, old Pantalone! I should rather wish to die …(aside) but that would certainly be a waste… so I am forced to run away, instead, and find my own, true heart’s desire! …
Rosalina: Marry Pantalone! (spits) How dreadful! Yes, dying would be much preferred… (thinks a minute, perhaps looking around for a helpful answer). What about Lyon S?
Isabella: Lyonesse! [chimes sound a la Franceschina] Yes, that sounds like a good idea! I’ll get ready right away!
Satisfied, Rosalina exits.
Isabella: Yes! Lyonesse! [chimes sound a la Franceschina] I’ve heard of that place… (she gets her pack, preparing to leave, walks over to Arelecchino, revealing him to audience.) Come along, Servant Lad, and carry my pack. We are off in search of my heart’s desire, Lyonesse! [chimes sound a la Franceschina]
Arlecchino quickly finishes a bite and rises, taking her pack.
Arlecchino: As you wish…
He follows, they march off [to Franceschina’s whistle.] Rosalina dances behind them for a short while, then goes off in another direction, obviously happy. They pass all players, once around, and finally stop once again, Center, apparently lost. [When they stop, the music stops. Arlecchino drops his pack, etc., each time.]
Isabella: I am afraid that we are lost. And these woods certainly are spooky and scary! (notices Violente for the first time, who is sharpening something) You, there! What are you doing?
Violente: (stops) Nothing…
Isabella: Then come here to me! I have coins to pay, if you can help me. I am looking for the Land of Lyonesse. [chimes sound a la Franceschina]
Violente: Yes! Here it is! The lance of Lyonesse! (hands her a lance).
Isabella: No, no. I am looking for the LAND of Lyonesse. [chimes sound a la Franceschina] But, thank you very much for returning the lance. We will take it with us, for I am searching for my heart’s desire! Here, Lad, you may carry the lance.
Arlecchino: As you wish…
Violente: Yes, yes… I DO know the way to Lyonesse, as it happens. And I will take you there, if the price is right! I am at your service, and can be your protection on the way.
Isabella and Violente march off [to Franceschina’s whistle.], Arlecchino a bit behind as he fumbles with his pack. Rosalina appears, calling to them to go back, pointing in the direction of Arlecchino (and the direction they came). They pass Brighella, and the other players, once around, then stop abruptly where he stands, playing with his sheep. [When they stop, the music stops. Arlecchino drops his pack, etc., each time.]
Isabella (pointing to Brighella): You, there! What are you doing?!
Brighella: (stops) Nothing…
Isabella: Then come here to me! I have coins to pay, if you can help me. I am looking for the Land of Lyonesse. [chimes sound a la Franceschina]
Brighella: Yes! Here it is! The Lamb of Lyonesse! (hands her the lamb).
Isabella: No, no. I am looking for the LAND of Lyonesse. [chimes sound a la Franceschina] But, thank you very much for returning the lamb. We will take it with us, for I am searching for my heart’s desire! Here, Lad, you may carry the lamb.
Arlecchino: As you wish…
Brighella: Yes, yes … I DO know the way to Lyonesse, as it happens. And I will take you there, if the price is right! I am at your service, for I am the greatest tour guide in all of the world!
Isabella, Violente and Brighella march off [to Franceschina’s whistle.], Arlecchino a bit behind as he fumbles with his pack and other items. Rosalina appears, calling to them to go back, pointing in the direction of Arlecchino (and the direction they came). They pass Ballerina and Franceschina, once around, then stop abruptly where Ballerina is doing her ribbon dance. [When they stop, the music stops. Arlecchino drops his pack, etc., each time.]
Isabella (pointing to Ballerina): You, there! What are you doing?! I have coins to pay, if you can help me. I am looking for the Land of Lyonesse. [chimes sound a la Franceschina]
Ballerina hands Brighella a spool.
Brighella: Ah, yes! What is this she has? Yes, I have heard of it! The lanyard of Lyonesse! The greatest lanyard in all of the world! (passes it to Violente, who examines it and then passes it on to Isabella).
Isabella: No, no. I am looking for the LAND of Lyonesse. [chimes sound a la Franceschina] But, thank you very much for returning the lanyard. We will take it with us, for I am searching for my heart’s desire! Here, Lad, you may carry the lanyard.
Arlecchino: As you wish…
Ballerina continues a series of dance positions, a la sign post.
Violente: It looks as though she DOES know the way to Lyonesse [chimes sound a la Franceschina]. What d’ya say, should we take her with us?
Isabella, Violente, Brighella and Ballerina march off [to Franceschina’s whistle.], Arlecchino a bit behind as he fumbles with his pack and other items. Rosalina appears, calling to them to go back, pointing in the direction of Arlecchino (and the direction they came). They pass Franceschina, once around, then stop abruptly where she is playing her whistle. [When they stop, the music stops. Arlecchino drops his pack, etc., each time.]
Isabella (pointing to Franceschina): You, there! What are you doing?! I have coins to pay, if you can help me. I am looking for the Land of Lyonesse. [chimes sound a la Franceschina]
Franceschina: Yes, yes, I can… just baked this morning (reaches into basket)… the flan of Lyonesse!
(She hands the flan to Arlecchino, who sits down and, with a giant spoon, begins to eat the flan. When he pulls out the flan, his S falls to the ground. Ballerina begins dancing around, very excitedly.)
Isabella: No, no. I am looking for the LAND of Lyonesse. [looks at Franceschina, but no chimes this time] But, thank you very much for the flan. We will take it with us, or (noticing Arlecchino devouring it with gusto) just let the Lad eat it… , for I am searching for my heart’s desire! Ballerina continues to dance around, jumping up and down, tugging on sleeves, etc.
Franceschina: What is that you say, Ballerina?
Isabella: (some nonsense) rinse and repeat?
Violente: (some nonsense) two words, first word…
Brighella: (some nonsense) the highest mountains in all of the world!
Franceschina: (some nonsense) You know the secret recipe!!?!
Ballerina, dancing very excitedly now, causes the players to bump into one another, knocking into Arlecchino, who nearly falls…
Arlecchino: Careful, guys, you nearly made me fall on my S!
Rosalina: (Runs in, agitated…) S! S! Lyon S! (pointing to Arlecchino) Lyon S!!! Your heart’s desire! He has been right there, with you, all along!
Isabella: What?! This Lad? This is the Lad, Lyon S?… (leans toward him, affectionately) Oohh, Lyon!! My heart’s desire…
Arlecchino: What is your wish?!…
Violente: The LAD Lyon S?!! Not the place?!!
Brighella: This is crazy! What a plot twist!! Maybe the craziest in all of the world!
Franceschina: Does this mean we are NOT going to Lyonesse? (the players hesitate, waiting for the chimes sound, which does not come)
Rosalina: Lyoness is not a place! That name would never pass the Laurel Queen of Arms!
Violente: Why don’t we all just go to Lyondemere, then?
Brighella: Ah, Lyondemere, yes,… the greatest Barony in all of the World!
Franceschina: Rosalina, you come along with us! I hear the Baron really cooks… (blah, blah)
All exit, save Isabella and Arlecchino, who remain arm in arm.
Isabella: Lyon S, you were a lad lost, but now I am back here with you, and I never want to leave home again, never, ever…
Arlecchino: As you wish…
